Arched Window Blinds

The arched window has become a common focal point in many newly constructed homes. The beauty of these windows is an advantage both aesthetically and for practical reasons; they allow light to enter the house and make a room of any size seem spacious and bright. However, especially in the heat of summer, sometimes it’s necessary to filter the light by installing arched window blinds.

We are used to seeing most of these windows as a half circle but there are also ones that have curved tops and straight sides. Some are quarter arches, which are also becoming more common. A curved arch window is known by architects as Romanesque, a style based on the architecture of ancient Rome. Then there are Gothic arches which are the shape of a peak, more of a triangle. The curved arch is the most common shape seen in today’s construction as well as in older houses, especially those built in the early 20th century.

Shading an arched window used to be challenging as well as frustrating but with today’s materials and craftsmanship, a shade on such a window can be both practical and beautiful. You can now get arched window blinds that are already manufactured or you may want to commission a custom made treatment.

There are many choices for shading an arched window. Depending on the décor of your home, you may want to cover it with shutters that are specially built for the window shape, made of real or imitation wood or plastic. These are attractive as well as practical; light is controlled by moving the louvers with an attached rod. There are also stationary, custom built wooden covers with cut-outs to allow light to enter but not flood the room. These types of window treatments don’t do much to insulate a window but they lend a room elegance and go with almost any color scheme.

You may want to look at honeycomb window blinds, also referred to as cellular blinds. These types of arched window blinds soften the light entering the room and add insulation to the window. Cellular blinds can be installed as a fixed window treatment or as moveable. The cost is low and they come in a wide variety of colors and textures. If you prefer a lot of light entering your room but an uncovered window is just too much, you will probably like cellular blinds.

Retractable blinds are also a good choice for this type of window. They can completely cover the window for privacy and light control or they can be retracted and allow the window to be uncovered whenever you like. These blinds also come in many different colors and materials. If the window is near the ceiling and hard to reach, retractable blinds are a good choice to control light.

Arched window blinds can add to the beauty of your window and your home. Rather than covering up the window these treatments enhance them, expand your lighting options and complement your decorating style.
